Concept

"5p a Fortune" started out as an assignment for a VFX class.
I wanted to create something that could come out of Del Toro´s "Nightmare Alley".

I was inspired by a horror rendition of fortune tellers - the concept and aesthetic of curiosity cabinets and an unidentifyable person behind the curtains.
It resulted in a fortune teller and creepy guttersnipe twins tasked with luring unsuspecting people to an unfortunate fate.

Making Of

Making the Fortune Teller:
I used the uncanny body of an old character (Van) for the fortune teller. I repainted the skin in Zbrush to have a more sickly blue-ish undertone and imported the model with its texture into Substance Painter to refine it. I then rigged and animated his hands.

Making the Twins:
I used the Extract Function in Zbrush to create their shirts, pants and socks and then retopologized everything in Maya via the Quad Draw Tool.
I painted their skin manually in Zbrush and textured everything else in Substance Painter.

The result of the VFX assignment: Camera Tracking in After Effects and importing Tracking Data into a 3D Maya scene to combine real life footage with 3D models.
Includes a  VFX pass breakdown.

Making the "Cabinet":
I blocked basic geometry in Maya and used nCloth to simulate cloth. I added additional folds and detail to the wood framing of the cabinet in Zbrush.
I textured everything in Substance Painter and used opacity maps for the fringes.
