VW BEETLE

3D Modeling.

2024
Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter.

Concept

I was inspired by the look of old, abandoned vehicles left in nature, overgrown with moss and grass. I also liked the idea of abandoned luggage - like a moment in time, swallowed by the passage of centuries.

Making Of

I used references to model front, side and back of the car. I added some more cartoonish, stylized shapes. To make the car´s silhouette look more appealing, I added several pieces of luggage and ropes to tie down all of the stuff on top of the car. I decided on leaving one tire out next to the car to further emphasize the feeling of abandonment.

Lastly, I added grass and a tree using Maya Paint Effects, adjusted the colors and got started on UVs.

Texturing

I wanted to car to have a porcellain-like, almost matte finish.
The inside should be filled with old, overgrown leather and almost entirely hidden by moss.
I used vintage poster designs for the abandoned boxes inside and on top of the car.

I hand-painted the moss on the car to get it to look like I wanted.

In a last step, I added more shards for the car´s broken windows and

set the stage with the right lighting.
